Needle felting is the art of taking a flat piece of wool and whipping it into shape with a very sharp needle. You really don't need much in the way of supplies, just some wool and the needle. However, once you start your wool stash it takes on a life of its own, as anyone hooked on this craft will tell you. Like shoes, you just never have enough wool. There is just something addictive about the sweet scent of newly cleaned wool. If you are involved on any level with needle felting you know what I'm talking about.
There are a few types of needle felting. Dry, wet and a combination of both. The West Highland White Terrier on this page was created by the dry method of needle felting. He is 100% wool and one of my cutest creations.
Sculptures spring from the imagination. There are times when the wool seems to take over and you are just along for the ride. Never fight the wool. Most often the resulting creation is so much better than the idea you started with. Even though I have been involved with needle felting for a long time I am still in awe when that flat piece of wool begins to take on a shape and become what I intended. Held together for all time by the tangle of wool made by the felting needle.
This is an artistic process. There are a variety of fibers in a wide range of colors. Some natural and some helped along by the artist. The end result depends on the fiber and method used, from a flat felted picture to a three dimensional soft sculpture.
